Fire or evacuation with animals
Prepare a kit, know where to go and how to carry each animal before civil protection orders you out.
Life at risk? Call an emergency vet or 112 right now. 112
What to do, step by step
- 1Prepare an emergency kit in advance: a carrier per animal, leash, water and food for three days, medication, a copy of the registration and vaccines, a recent photo.
- 2At the first warning, close the animals in one room or in the carriers: frightened animals hide and time is lost catching them.
- 3Leave with the animals; never leave them shut in or tied up. If you must choose, take first the ones that cannot survive alone.
- 4Large animals (horses, livestock): open the doors of sheds and fences so they can flee the fire if you cannot take them.
- 5Follow the instructions of civil protection and the firefighters; ask which shelters accept animals.
- 6Afterwards: watch for burnt paws, coughing and eyes irritated by smoke — the vet should check them.
